Typo: "...he don’t have to." don't -> won't
Does Thing run around like that in the original cartoons?
Growing up watching the old TV show strongly conditioned me to think of Thing as a hand coming out of boxes around the house. I always envisioned that Thing was some large entity living in a warren of tunnels under the house and the hand that appeared was simply his extremity. So it's always a large dissonance for me to think of him running around on his finger tips.
I didn't even know about the original cartoons. The _Chas Addams Happily Ever After_ book is now on my Christmas list. :-)
Great chapter, many thanks for sharing it with us. I'm anxiously awaiting more.
Ishtar replied:
Typo is fixed - thank you!
There's only one cartoon I can think of with Thing - in that one, an arm comes up out of the base of a phonograph to change the record, and there's a second hand as well. It could be understood that there's a person inside the phonograph. In the TV show, Thing kept popping out of boxes and holes that had been cut for him. But I adored the active, heroic movie Thing, so that's the one I'm using.

Very nice chapter.
I read 1& 2 yesterday, then went for a day trip. I found myself picturing Harry with the new family on and off all day. Wondering about his trademark outfit led to thinking maybe he'll be completely normal (just to look at) which led to recalling the other TV series with the blonde college girl member. I had to set my and my husband's sub-conscious onto the problem of what it was called etc - are you old enough to know I wonder? - anyway, a couple of hours later 'MUNSTERS' popped into my head, followed slowly by other details, and an entertaining recall of sixties TV ensued.
And I'll be most interested to see your ideas on Harry's Addams family style. I assume the Gomez suit was just for the party.
And I loved Morticia's remarks to Petunia about her belonging if she accepts it.
Cheers.

Very nice your Petunia is a much nicer and more belivable character then is normally seen in fanfiction without actually contradicting the abusive nearly homocidal bi*** we see in canon, congradulations.
I dislike the "alarm which stops before anyone can notice it" plot point partly because it's been misused and over used in many stories and partly because of the idiocy inherent in it (Idiocy of the Headmaster and the rest of the wizarding world) which seems somewhat excessive to me even when compared to what we see in canon.
In this case in particular I have a problem with Petunia being the first one to sign. Unless there was a special requirement that she sign first (in which case you should have mentioned it) I'd think she'd hesitate and thus be the last, not the first to sign which would eliminate the entire alarm sequence.
I really liked the party and especially Petunia and Morticia's conversation after it, do you think that might make Petunia spoil her son a bit less?
Ishtar replied:
I don't think Petunia started out as an abusive b!tch. I think that's something that grew over the course of ten years of resentfulness. Here, she's not completely unlikeable (and neither is Vernon, really) and some of her less likeable behaviors are going to be headed off early. In ten years, this Petunia will be quite different from canon - and it's going to affect Vernon and Dudley, too.
Having Petunia sign first was both for legal and magical reasons. Legally, the person who has the guardianship has to relinquish it before it can be assumed by the new guardians. The magical reason was the same. Lily's blood protection had to be released by Petunia before it could be transferred to Morticia (who is the closer relative) and Gomez (who is more distantly related).

Utterly priceless... I felt sorry for Thing, until the comment was made that Thing liked her. Silly me, I forgot about that. <grins> Seriously though, Harry's probably going to drive Voldemort and Umbridge utterly bonkers his fourth and fifth years, I imagine.

i imagine that writing Morticia would be pretty difficult. she is very ... stoically passionate? HArry is betrothed to Wednesday? i must admit that i didn't see that one coming. i think that i like it though. i am really looking foreward to seeing how changed Harry will be in his hogwarts years as a result of being raised by the Addams.

Hehehe, I'm loving this ficcy already! Petunia's utter horror of Thing is absolutely marvelous, and entirely to Canon.
And, while I can't truly see her disregarding any potential properties, monies, or things that Harry, himself, may have, I can see how having a spell on her would make her rush to get it taken off.
Harry/Wednesday? Are we using the Wednesday from the Cartoon, or the one from the Movies? One's a pale, vampirish thing, and the other is a snarky, freakish little thing that loves torture. Actually, now that I think about it... they're the same...
Great story so far!
William

I never saw the Addams family movies but have some fond memories of the TV show. This looks like an excellent crossover.

I loved the party, and only Thing would think that being flung across a room would be playing. I'm looking forward to Harry growing up in such a family. He would probably feel that the wizarding world would be rather tame to the Addams's standards.

Ahhhh, I can see some of the things that will probably change around the Dursely house very shortly. :) Bravo. And congrats on getting in two of your dares, though I don't know what they are. ;) hahahaha. Another lovely, lovely chapter. Really, thanks for sharing. :) I really enjoyed it. The Betrothal was a bit of a surprise, actually, but Gomez' explanation made perfect sense. Morticia's words to Petunia at the end were quite potent. I applaud the way you molded them together. I also like how you made Petunia aware of Morticia's dislike, but how she's still so formal; it gets Petunia thinking, I guess. I loved the breakfast scene. Harry's reaction to Petunia was amazing. :) hehehe. And Morticia "didn't notice." Ha. Right. Looking forward to Morticia's blow-up at Gomez (or possibly Grandmama) when Petunia leaves on the morrow. :-D Again, bravo for writing this and putting it up so quickly. At this rate, you'll finish NaNo no problem! :-D hehehe. Ciao!
Oh yeah, and Thing was fabulous, too. ;) hehehe. "He says you threw him into the wall... he likes you." :-D hahaha. I can just imagine Petunia's face. *grin*
Oh, and good on you for inserting Harry's "assets", but then giving Petunia something that would give her reason to overcome her desire for said assets. ;) Kudos.

Good story so far all I ask is that you don't make Harry turn out too wierd. He can be like the Cousin on The Munsters who is normal living with the abnormal. Also what is the relation between Harry and Wednesday?
Ishtar replied:
Rosemary Evans was Morticia's mother's cousin. That makes Lily and Morticia second cousins, and Harry and Wednesday are third cousins through Morticia's side and something like fifth cousins on Gomez's side.

I had Addams' "My Crowd" out of the library last weekend, but haven't recognized anything out of it yet. That's the only one of his cartoon collections i've read recently.
I do remember the conjoined twins from the TV show. I think... 25 years is a long time!
...art
Ishtar replied:
The twins are from the first movie - Flora and Fauna. The welcome dance was based largely on the ball scene in the first film. There's a two-headed man sitting in the background of Fester's bachelor party in the second movie. Come to think of it, there's a two-headed fellow in some of the cartoons, so make that five items or lines from the cartoons.
